Aaron Matthews

July 11, 1925 — May 15, 2016

Aaron Arch Matthews was born in Minnow Creek, Arkansas on July 11, 1925, the seventh child of Stanley Blaine Matthews and Emma Pearl North Matthews. He passed from this life to his eternal home on May 15, 2016. He was preceded in death by his wife of 66 years Barbara Alene Childers Matthews, his parents, his sons Stanley Jack Matthews and John David Matthews, his brothers Blaine and James Matthews, his sisters Ila, Roma, Lorene, Rosene, Emogene, and Marcella, and his great-grandson Augustus Beck. He is survived by his daughter Emmadell Matthews Beck and husband Brian, his son Michael Matthews and wife Sue Partain Matthews, and his son Ron Matthews and wife Jerilyn Kessner Matthews. He is also survived by eleven grandchildren, six grandchildren-in-law and seven great grandchildren.
Aaron Arch was an active member of the Church of Christ, having served as an elder in the church and as a lifelong leader of song worship, as well teaching Bible class. He and his wife were known for their hospitality, hosting visiting preachers and church members in their home, and for providing support and guidance whenever and wherever needed. After moving to Texas in 1953, Aaron worked for the Dow Chemical Company for 29 years, ending his career as a shift foreman. He was a veteran of World War II, having served in the United States Navy as a medical corpsman.
Aaron's early life in Arkansas was as a farmer, and he maintained a life-long love of gardening and keeping cattle on their 15-acre home in the Wild Peach Community. The Matthews were well-known for the tomatoes and vegetables that they sold from their home. Aaron was also a self-taught fiddle player, and became known locally for his music. The Matthews spent many happy evenings with friends, fiddling and making all sorts of music. Aaron and friends also performed in the community from time to time, including events for the schools where his children attended. His first instrument was a fiddle obtained from Sears and Roebuck. In his search for ever-better instruments, Aaron hand-crafted at least seven instruments during his life. Aaron cared very much for his family, the church, and people. In his later years, he and his wife took great comfort from their dearly loved dog, Jazz.
Aaron Arch Matthews dealt with tragedy in his life, particularly with the death of two sons and a great grandson, but his faith in God and His Word never wavered. He took comfort and pride in the work that he did, and especially in the heritage of his family.
