Doris A. Miles Setzer was born October 8 1932 to Ernest and Beatrice Miles in her grandparent's log cabin in Carmona, Texas. She passed away peacefully in her sleep at SPJST Nursing Facility in Needville, Texas on November 4,2024 at the age of 92.
Doris' family moved from Wharton to Brazoria when she was 10 and she remained there until her move to SPJST Nursing Facility in 2020. She attended Brazoria Elementary and West Columbia High School where she graduated in 1949. Following 2 years of business college in Houston, she married Marvin Ray Setzer in January of 1951 and lived in Brazoria where they raised their family of four children.
Doris and Marvin believed in serving their community. Doris was a banker in Brazoria until her retirement as Vice President of the Bank in the mid 1980s. She then devoted her time to working with various organizations including the Library Association, the Brazoria Historical Foundation and the Cemetery Association. She devoted years to genealogical research for her family, Marvin's family and even those in the cemetery whom she had grown close to. She loved Texas history and wrote an unpublished book about the history of Brazoria and surrounding areas including local plantations and ranches. Working with the Historical Association was her real joy.
Another passion for her was her dedication to the Fire Department. When Marvin joined the fire department at age 22, she was right there with him as a member of the Ladies Auxiliary and served more than 30 years, In 1976 she served as the State President of the Texas Firemen's and Fire Marshall's Association Ladies Auxiliary. Service to the community and to the State became a family affair as sons, a son in law and a grandson all followed in the Fire service.
A public visitation is planned for Monday, November 11, 2024 at First Presbyterian Church of Brazoria at 10:00AM with funeral service to follow at 11:00AM. Interment will follow at Brazoria Cemetery.
Pallbearers are her grandsons - Ben Loggins, Todd Loggins, Keith Setzer, Ti-Ray Setzer, Andrew Setzer, Jason Curry, Matt Peterson, and in absentia Eli Setzer, Chase Prescott and Ethan Prescott and in memory Chance Setzer. Honorary pallbearers are Wink Boling and members of Brazoria Fire Department.
Doris is preceded in death by her parents Ernest and Beatrice Miles, her infant brother, her husband of 58 years Marvin Ray, and her grandson Chance Setzer.
