Douglas "Doug" James Schuerg, beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend, passed away peacefully on January 6, 2025, at the age of 88 in Sweeny, Texas. Born on February 18, 1936, in Fredericksburg, Texas, to Albert C. Schuerg and Anna Schmidt Schuerg, Doug was the youngest of three boys raised on their family farm. His parents instilled in him the values of hard work, resilience, and a deep appreciation for family.

After serving in the U.S. Army and being stationed in Thule, Greenland, Doug returned home and married his love, Betty, on October 19, 1957. Shortly after, the couple moved to Sweeny, Texas, where Doug began a long and dedicated career as a lineman for TNMP Electric while raising their three children. In his small-town community, Doug was known as the go-to person for help and advice, always ready with the right tool or solution to fix any problem.

Doug’s talents extended far beyond his professional life. An exceptional woodworker, he could craft anything from furniture to board games to what Betty lovingly called "dust collectors." His passion for creating left a lasting mark, with many of his creations treasured by family and friends. Doug’s fondest memories included playing cards, dominoes, and other games with his grandchildren and friends, moments that brought laughter and will always be remembered.

Doug and Betty shared a love for the outdoors, traveling across the country with their camper and spending time with countless friends and family along the way. Doug’s passion for fishing and shrimping often took him to Sargent, Texas, where he and Betty cherished time at their fishing cabin. Sargent became a beloved gathering place for their family, passing down a shared love of nature and togetherness to their children and grandchildren.

Doug is survived by his devoted wife of 67 years, Betty Schuerg, and his three children: Carolyn Schuerg of Dickinson, Texas; James Schuerg (Tracy) of Bay City, Texas; and David Schuerg (Andrea) of Sweeny, Texas. His legacy lives on through his grandchildren—Tabitha, Krista, Jamie, Connor, and Sydney—and great-grandchildren, Zachary, Bradley, and Hayes. He is also remembered fondly by countless friends, extended family, and those lucky enough to call him "Uncle Dougie."

Doug was preceded in death by his parents, his brothers Milton and Carl, and his grandson Colton.

A graveside service will be held on January 10, 2025, at Sweeny Cemetery, located at Old Main St, Sweeny, TX. Family and friends will gather to honor Doug’s remarkable life and celebrate the love, wisdom, and joy he brought to all who knew him.

The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the caregivers who supported Doug in his final days. Doug's memory will never be forgotten.
