Gene Hammerstein, Sr.

Gene Thomas Hammerstein, Sr. 85 of Sweeny, Texas passed away Friday, April 24, 2015 at his home surrounded by his loving wife and children. He was a devoted husband, father, and son who lived his whole life for his family. He was born June 18, 1929 in Chicago, Illinois to John and Celia Maciejka Hammerstein. He worked for Phillips Petroleum as a dispatcher and retired after 42 years of dedicated service.

A funeral mass was celebrated 10:00am, Thursday, April 30, 2015 at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church in Sweeny. Visitation will be Wednesday evening from 5:00pm until 7:00pm with a rosary being recited at 7:00pm at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church. Graveside services were held 2:00pm, Friday, May 1, 2015 at Holy Cross Cemetery in San Antonio. Serving as pallbearers will be his sons and sons-in-law.

Gene is survived by his wife of 62 years, Lina Magdalene Soder Hammerstein of Sweeny; children, Victoria M. Veverka and husband, Tim of Palos Hills, IL; Gene T. Hammerstein, Jr. and wife, Cynthia of Savannah, GA; Gregory Hammerstein and wife, Heidi of Savannah, GA; David T. Hammerstein and wife, Donita of Canton, Michigan; Andrea Francis and husband, Timothy of New Braunfels; and Theresa Glenn and husband, Jeffrey of Pflugerville; along with son-in-law, Jim Shepherd of Mesa, AZ; brother, John Hammerstein and wife, Joan of Palos Hills, IL; sister-in-law, Rita Brice and brother-in-law, Ludwig Soder; 16 grandchildren, 3 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews and family members.

He is preceded in death by his daughter, Denise C. Hammerstein-Shepherd; his parents; sister, Elaine Brice and brother-in-law, Patrick Brice.
