Jimmy Shearer, Jr. served proudly in the U.S. Marine Corps after graduating from Palacios High School. He was stationed in Hawaii before returning to Texas and attending Wharton County Junior College. There he met Sweeny High School's "Most Beautiful" senior of 1955, Eleanor Rose "Dubie" Hughes. Jimmy and Dubie were married on August 23, 1957. The newlyweds then moved to Austin where Jimmy completed his business degree at the University of Texas, while Dubie worked at the state capital building.
The couple followed job opportunities to Corpus Christi and then to Houston, where their only child, Stephen Hughes Shearer was born in 1967. In 1970, the family moved to Dubie's home town of Sweeny, and traded the big city for the comfort of home. Jimmy began working at Phillips Petroleum and after his retirement began a second career teaching at Sweeny Elementary. He was loved and respected by the students and voted Teacher of the Year.
Jimmy was preceded in death by his loving wife of 57 years, Dubie; his parents; and his younger brother, Phillip. He is survived by his son Stephen and his baby sister, Ginger Hennig and husband, Charles; his nephews and nieces Bowie, Christie, Theresa, and Phil and their families.
Over the years, Jimmy faced several physical challenges, and the family is grateful for the amazing staff at Sweeny Community Hospital, Angels Home Health Care, and AMED Hospice. The incredible family at Sweeny House took care of "Mr. Jimmy" with love, dignity, compassion, and a work ethic second to none. The family is forever thankful for such a model facility as Sweeny House in our community.
We can all draw comfort in the knowledge that in Heaven there is no illness, no pain. We are made whole again.
