Jerry Phillips

June 3, 1935 — October 10, 2016

Jerry Wheeler Phillips 81, peacefully went to be with the Lord on October 10, 2016. He was born June 3, 1935 to parents Gracie and Paul Phillips. He was born into a Christian family and served the Lord his whole life. He spent his childhood in Okmulgee, Oklahoma surrounded by extensive family with cousins raised more as brothers and sisters. In 1947, his father was transferred to the Old Ocean refinery which brought his family to Sweeny. Jerry graduated from Sweeny High School in May of 1953 with a Band scholarship to Wharton Junior College playing the trombone. After one semester he enlisted into the Air Force which he served from November 17, 1953 until November 16, 1961.

After serving his country, Jerry began a career as a motorcycle police officer in San Antonio where he served from 1963 until 1972. Life as a motorcycle cop had many adventures along with a few wrecks and injuries, which led him to switch careers, move back to Sweeny and began working at Phillips 66 where he worked until he retired at the age of 55.
While working at Phillips 66 he sought his first election for city judge in 1984. For the next 30 years he proudly served his community as Sweeny Municipal Judge where he impacted many lives. Also during the years 1992 until 2002 he worked for the Sweeny ISD driving a bus and was the in school suspension teacher. But of all the many titles and positions, the ones he held closest to his heart were that of Husband, Daddy and Bepaw.

Funeral services will be held 10:00am, Friday, October 14, 2016 at First Baptist Church in Sweeny with Pastor John Price officiating. Burial will follow at Sweeny Cemetery. Visitation will be Thursday evening at Baker Funeral Home in West Columbia from 6:00pm until 8:00pm. Serving as pallbearers will be Mason Crisp, Gary Kraemer, Chris Alfrey, Paul Phillips, Terry Phillips and Jay Crisp. Honorary pallbearers will be James Barnett, David Barnett, Mark Barnett, Lige Stevens and Johnny Toscano. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church Children's Playground Fund, 402 N. Main St., Sweeny, Texas 77480.

He is survived by his wife, Delta Phillips, brother and sister-in-law, Terry and Diane Phillips, daughter and son-in-law, Marchelle and Nicky Ordonez, daughter and son-in-law, Paula and James Crisp, step-children, James and Donna Barnett, Cheryl and Lige Stevens, Mark and Trina Barnett, David and Judy Barnett; grandchildren, Johnny Toscano, Stevie Ordonez, Lorissa and Kirby Phillips, Christina Kraemer, Jessica Alfrey and Mason Crisp, Richard and Robert Barnett, Amanda McCain, Jeremy and Dustin Williams, Cory and Cayton Barnett, Lizzie Bice and Rebecca Peeples; great-grandchildren, Jayson Roachell, Olivia Kraemer, Carter Rose Alfrey , Jade, Cooper and Thomas Toscano, Tyler McCain and Aiden Bice.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Gracie and Paul Phillips, sister, Connie Jones, wife, Charlotte Phillips and son, Craig Phillips.
