John Robert Hughey passed away peacefully on January 21, 2017 at the age of 80 at his home near Bay City, Texas.

John is survived by his sister Ann Sackett of Saint Petersburg, Florida, his sons Jay Hughey of Austin, Texas and Travis Hughey of Buchanan Dam, Texas, his daughter Missy Dennis and her husband Peter and their children Drew, Abby and Kate of The Woodlands, Texas, his nieces Susan Wilk of Dallas, Texas and Karen Akins of Stowe Vermont, and many loving relatives and friends. He is preceded in death by his parents and his wife.

John was born on April 3, 1936 to Melvin and Roberta Hughey in Weleetka, Oklahoma. In his youth, John was an active member of the Presbyterian Church and was also an Honor Scout in Boy Scouts of America. He attended Weleetka High School and played quarterback on the football team. He graduated from Oklahoma University with his undergraduate degree in 1958 and a law degree in 1960. He was a member of Kappa Sigma fraternity and remained actively involved throughout his adult life. John served the United States Air Force from 1960-1963 as a First Lieutenant and was stationed in Spokane, Washington and Guam.

In 1965, John married Jane Bond Bonner and adopted her sons Jay and Travis. Their daughter Missy was born in 1967 in Oklahoma City. John practiced law there before moving his family to College Station in 1970 and started Oceanography International Corporation. He returned to Oklahoma City in 1986 to resume his law practice. John had a close circle of dear friends and retired in 2007 to his current home on the Colorado River near Bay City, Texas to do what he loved most, "cook, entertain friends and go fishing."
