John Robert Long

John Robert (Bob) Long 79, of Richmond, TX , passed away at on Tuesday, February 25, 2025. He was born in Wharton on October 11, 1945. He grew up in Sweeny and graduated from Sweeny High School in 1964. He loved growing up in a small town. He was a gifted athlete and cherished getting to play sports and competing in junior rodeo competitions at a young age.

He graduated from the University of Houston with a business degree in 1969. After graduation, he started a career in the oil and gas business and became president of Houston Flange Company in the 1970’s where he remained for many years. Then he began a career in the insurance business, becoming an agent with Farmers Insurance where he remained until he retired. In his spare time, he loved to rodeo and constantly being around horses that he loved to breed and train. He also loved to play golf and cherished the times he was with his family.

He was preceded in death by his parents Bill and Joyce Long, his sister Brenda Sue, his brother Bill Long his aunt Jo Gwen Underwood and uncle Son Bass.

 Bob is survived by his daughter Amy Long, sons Bobby (Sara) and Danny (Maida), his grandchildren Lauren Long, Drew Long, Morgan Long, Nate Long, Will Long and Audrey Long. He is also survived by his 2 brothers Don Long (Laura) and Kirk Long (Marilyn) and his sister-in-law, Nancy Long. He also was loved by his many cousins, nieces and nephews. Bob loved the annual Long family gatherings in Sweeny and Port Aransas. 

Serving as pallbearers are Brett Carter, Drew Long, Jerry Long, Nate Long, Will Long and Craig Peterson.

Relatives and friends are invited to his viewing on Thursday February 27th from 5-7 pm at C.T. Baker Funeral Home 634 S. Columbia Dr. West Columbia. A graveside service will be held on Friday February 28th, 10:00 a.m. at Sweeny Cemetery.
