Joyce Juanita Fails, 92, went to her eternal resting place with the Lord on July 29, 2023. She was born on January 28, 1931 to Roy and Hattie Thompson in Clifton, Tx.
As a 16-year-old, Joyce was in high school in Texas City, Tx. and survived the horrific explosion of the “S. S. Grandcamp” (a ship loaded with fertilizer containing ammonia nitrate) in 1947, also remembered as the “Texas City Explosion of 1947.” She was a member of the Sweeny Church of Christ and spent most of her adult life as a housewife while helping to raise her three kids. She later worked in the flower shop at Wells Florist and Nursery for dear friends Gary and Beverly Wells. Upon retirement, Glynn and Joyce enjoyed traveling and camping, visiting all 49 of the mainland U. S. states.
Joyce is survived by daughter Janet Joyner (David) of Lubbock, Tx., sons Gary Fails (Mary) of Sweeny, Tx., and John Fails of San Antonio, Tx. She is also survived by six grandchildren: Nicholas Hammond (Sarah), Allyson Wall (Dustin), Staci Lewis, Lindsay Steffens (Justin), Orey Fails (Sarah Kaye), and Hayden Fails, along with 13 great-grandchildren.
Joyce is preceded in death by her loving husband of 67 years, Glynn Fails, and parents Roy and Hattie Thompson, brothers Roy and John Earl “Sonny” Thompson.
Relatives and friends are invited to her viewing on Friday August 4th from 5-7 P.M. at C.T. Baker & Sons Funeral Home 634 S. Columbia Dr. West Columbia, TX 77486. Funeral service will be held on Saturday August 5th, beginning at 11A.M. at the Sweeny Church of Christ. 501 N. Elm St., Sweeny. Interment to follow at Sweeny Cemetery where Joyce will be laid to rest beside her beloved Glynn.
