Lillian Jones

Lillian Annette Jones (Lil) passed away August 1, 2015 at UTMB in Galveston. Lillian Annette was born to Lillian Pearl Black Jones and William George Jones in East Columbia on December 14, 1926. She was a graduate of Columbia Brazoria ISD in 1944 and received a BS from Southwest Texas State College in 1947. Following her grandmother and mother's career path, she spent the rest of her life dedicated to education retiring in 1984 from full time teaching. She continued as a substitute teacher completing 43 years in the classroom. She served as a trustee for Columbia Brazoria ISD beginning in 1990. Her career began at Columbia High School and spanned the globe with assignments in the Philippine Islands, Japan and Germany. Stateside she taught students at Angleton High School, Brazosport High School, Brazoswood High School and Sweeny High School. Lillian was active in her community and was a lifelong member of Columbia Methodist Church. She served as a member of the Community School Awareness Committee in West Columbia, an officer for Friends of Library in West Columbia, an officer for the Historical and Genealogical Society in West Columbia, a board member of Columbia Historical Museum, an officer on the CEMS Board and a board member of the Columbia Cemetery Association. She received Outstanding Citizen of the Year Award in 1992. She was a living encyclopedia of East Columbia history and was proud of her heritage. She loved to educate anyone interested in the birth of our state and East Columbia's role. Lillian was born and raised on the banks of Varner Creek growing up in a house of women including her Mother Lillian, Grandmother Minnie (Big Mama), Aunt Alice (Lappa) and household cook Phina. She and her brother Billy were showered with love and indoctrinated with good manners. Lillian returned in 1955 after her time abroad and spent the remainder of her life in the family home known in the historical records as the Nash Wright Home in East Columbia. Lillian Annette was preceded in death by her parents Lillian and George Jones, her uncle William Henry Black Sr, her brother James William (Billy) Jones, nephew George William (Little Bill) Jones, great nephew in law David Moffett, and great nephew James Orton. Despite never marrying, Lillian Annette enjoyed the love of her large family. NoNo, as she was affectionately called, is survived by her sister in law Fern Jones, cousins WH Black and Dan Black, Nieces JoAnn Fondon and Karen Tuttle (Lance), great niece Jeannine Veselka (Jim), great nephews Bill Orton, Perrie Fondon (Marilyn - Hanna, Jasmine, Ian) and Nicolas Tuttle (Christy - Austin, Maria), great great nieces Bonnie Tuttle, Ashley Lennette (Joe - Addisyn, Ava), Amanda Lively (Brandon - Alonna, Grant, Weston), great great nephew Colby Orton. Visitation will be held at the Columbia United Methodist Church in West Columbia from 9 to 11 am Thursday, August 6, 2015. Funeral services will follow at 11 am at the church. Interment following at Columbia Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Ken Whitt, Billy Jenn, Vernon Phillips, Scooter Phillips, Bill Orton and Perrie Fondon. Donations in lieu of flowers to Columbia United Methodist Church or the charity of your choice in Lillian Annette's name.
