Lorene Agnes Giles, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend, passed away peacefully on March 15, 2025, at the age of 93 in Angleton, Texas. Born on February 24, 1932, in Richmond, Kansas, Lorene spent her life embodying grace, elegance, and a deep love for her family and faith.
For many years, Lorene worked for General Motors in El Paso, Texas until her well-deserved retirement. Yet, her true legacy extends beyond her work achievements; it resides in the hearts of those she loved and the many lives she touched with her kindness and spirit.
As a devoted Catholic, Lorene was a faithful parishioner over the years at the parishes of St. Pius X in El Paso, Texas and St. Patrick in Denison, Texas. After moving to Damon, Texas she continued to practice her faith at St. John The Apostle Catholic Church in West Columbia, Texas. Her spiritual journey led her into a state of grace and acceptance into her eternal home upon her passing.
Lorene was described by her daughter-in-law as a woman of true beauty; the kind of woman who applied her lipstick every morning to greet the day and her husband Al. Over the years they enjoyed square dancing together and eventually retired to a home on the Texas side of Lake Texoma where they were surrounded by nature. Her family saw her as an amazing, resilient, talented, beautiful, smart, funny and admirable woman, that cherished the simple pleasures of life. She enjoyed reading, sewing, gardening and volunteering at the library and thrift store in Pottsboro, Texas. She was a great cook that made the best lemon bars and always had ice cream in the freezer.
In her later years, as dementia took hold, Lorene offered her family a unique perspective. She taught them to see the world anew each day through the eyes of a child, filled with awe and wonder to appreciate the beauty of sunrises, the sky filled with clouds, the vibrant life in fields of wildflowers and colorful sunsets. This invaluable lesson is a testament to her childlike spirit and the love she shared.
Lorene's proudest accomplishment is her enduring love story with her high school sweetheart, Alfred. They were married at the young ages of 19 and 20 at St. John the Baptist Church in Greely, Kansas, spending over 75 beautiful years together, hand-in-hand through the good times as well as the challenging times.
She is survived by her devoted husband of 75 years, Alfred Giles; her children Patricia Diane Giles (the late Jim) of Santa Fe, New Mexico, Michael Wayne Giles and his wife Karen of Claremore, Oklahoma and Steven Paul Giles and his wife Rebecca of Damon, Texas; her grandchildren Summer Walker (Jason), Ryan Giles (Brandi), Mary Nicole Logsdon (Matt), Jacob Giles (Amanda), and Jessica Ervin (Cole); and great-grandchildren Jack Andrew Walker, Charlotte Marie Logsdon, Tucker Wayne Logsdon, Oliver Roy Logsdon, Jackson Steven Giles, and Charles James Giles. Lorene is also survived by her siblings, Roy Lickteig, Leona Huettenmueller, and Birdie Murray; along with many nephews and nieces.
She is predeceased by her parents Agnes (Katzer) and Hubert Lickteig, her daughter Sandra Lee Giles, and her siblings Norman Lickteig and Bernetta Bach.
Relatives and friends are invited to her viewing on Friday, March 21st from 12:30 - 2:00 at Sts. Cyril and Methodius Church located at 603 Mulcahy Ave., Damon, TX. Rosary will begin at 1:30 with her funeral service beginning at 2:00. Interment to follow at the Sts. Cyril and Methodius Catholic Cemetery in Damon. A meal will be provided afterwards in the parish hall.
As we celebrate her remarkable life, let us remember Lorene not only for her accomplishments but for the love and warmth she bestowed upon everyone fortunate enough to know her. Her legacy will live on through her family and friends, carrying forward the lessons of love, laughter, and the joys found in the simplest of moments.
