Maria Chavez Gonzalez, born on May 7, 1934, in Robstown, Texas, passed away on October 17, 2024 in Lake Jackson, Texas, surrounded by her loving family. A cherished matriarch, Maria dedicated her life to her family and her faith, providing warmth and guidance to all who knew her.
Maria was renowned for her vibrant personality and her love for everyone. Her family lovingly described her as very sociable and cherished visiting with friends and relatives. She had a giving spirit, opening her home to family and friends throughout the years when they needed a place to stay; she volunteered her time to her church for many decades. She was part of the Guadalupanas group for St Henry’s Church and later St Mary’s Church in Freeport where she supported the church’s programs.
She often expressed her deep faith by referring to God as "Mi Papa Dios (My Daddy God)," a testament to her profound spiritual connection. She was often found watching the Catholic Channel. An avid practitioner of her faith, Maria enjoyed reading and learning the scriptures and praying the rosary.
Maria was preceded in death by her parents Manuela and Miguel Chavez, as well as her sister Silvestra (Beta) and her brother Margarito. She is survived by her devoted husband of 61 years, Tiburcio (Bucho) Ruano Gonzalez, and her six children: Minnie Cansino and her husband Jose of New Braunfels; Rosie Salazar of Lake Jackson; Alicia Scott and her husband Allen of Angleton; Tony Gonzalez and his wife Melissa of Houston; Laura Duncan and her husband Ronnie of New Caney; and Maribel Ayala and her husband Marcos of Lake Jackson. Her legacy continues through her 16 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren, who always brought a smile to her face.
Surviving siblings: Miguel, Arturo, Sara, Hermelinda, Jose and Leticia
Maria enjoyed reminiscing about old times and family history. She loved sharing old family home remedies and was always searching for new ones; she dedicated time to sewing and caring for her plants, further showcasing her nurturing spirit. Her proudest accomplishments, however, centered around her family and her unwavering devotion to her faith.
