Mary Handy

On the morning of January 16, 2016, Mary Belle Handy passed away at her home in Sweeny, Texas at the age of 74.

She was surrounded by the love of her family in her last days as she bravely succumbed to cancer. Although her strong faith in her savior is a comfort to her family and friends, she will be greatly missed.

Mary was born in Galveston, Texas on June 16, 1941. From the age of 18 months old she was raised by her grandmother, Bessie Wiggins and great aunt Mary Barnes in Anahuac, Texas.
She was a nurse for over 40 years after graduating from Lee College in Baytown, Texas. Mary later continued her education and received an Associate Degree of Science at Brazosport College in Lake Jackson, Texas.

She moved to Virginia in 1980 where she lived for over 30 years and had only been back in Texas for the last 3 years.

Her caring nature carried over to all God's creatures and she volunteered with the local animal shelters in Virginia for 15 years. Mary fostered and cared for hundreds of cats and dogs during that time.

Mary is preceded in death by her husband, James Robert Handy and the above mentioned family.

She is survived by her daughter, Connie McKee & husband, Steven of Sweeny; son, Jim Richardson & wife, Lisa of Richmond, Virginia; grandchildren, Christopher, Matthew, and Cameron, all of Richmond, Virginia.

There will be a graveside service in Richmond, Virginia at a later date. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the charity of your choice.
