Maurine Cowart

March 30, 1922 — February 14, 2016

Maurine Cowart passed into eternal life peacefully on Sunday evening, February 14th in Houston, TX at the age of 93. The day she passed she was surrounded by the love of her family in presence and spirit.

She was born in Griffin, TX on March 30, 1922 to Robert and Mamie Jennings Mitchell. She enjoyed marriage to W.T. Cowart for 37 years until his death. They had two loving and amazing children, Ellen Joyce who resides in Houston, and William Thomas, known as Tommy, whom she will join in eternal life. She is survived by many who love her including her identical twin sister Pauline Danford, of Lake Jackson, TX, with whom she shared much--laughs, light barbs, child rearing, advice, fried okra, and a good life. In addition to Joyce Cash, her loving and adoring daughter, she is survived by her son-in-law Tony Cash, her two doting granddaughters Amanda Cash, of Washington D.C., and Lisa Driskill, husband Davin, and two great grandchildren, Lucy and Carson, of Arlington, VA; nephew John Danford, and his wife Roseanne of Brazoria, TX and her two great nieces, Reeana Redell and Jeana Garris and their families, of Montgomery, TX. She cherished time with all of her nieces and nephews on both the Cowart and Mitchell sides of her family, and always made time for a story or a visit with any of them. As soon as the annual family reunion passed she looked forward to the next one until it came.

Maurine was preceded in death by sisters Lois Danford, Wilma Danford, Pauline Danford, and Nadine Harwood, brother Billy Mitchell, and three brothers deceased early in age; sisters and brothers-in-law included Cecil and Myrtle Cowart, Clyde and Roxie Cowart, Mike and Della Cowart, Benny and Margaret Cowart, and Margaret Cowart Manofsky.

Funeral services will be held Friday, February 26, 2016 at 11:00 am at First Baptist Church of Brazoria with Reverend Greg Smith officiating. Visitation will be 10:00 am until service time at the church. Burial will follow at 2:00 pm at Evergreen Memorial Park in Wharton, TX. Serving as pallbearers are Robert Danford, Neal Danford, Davin Driskill, Doyle Danford, Ronald Wayne Cowart, and John Danford.

Maurine, Nonnie to her granddaughters and many others who loved her, was blessed to live a long and full life. She enjoyed a career as an obstetrics nurse until retirement, when she enjoyed travel, weekly dominoes, and lots of coffee with friends and relatives at her kitchen table. She and twin Pauline were such good "42" partners that people didn't want to play with them! She loved those close to her unconditionally, which will stay with all whom she leaves behind. Her innate wisdom, and ability to put a smile on your face will always be remembered, as will her ability to be plain spoken and "tell it like it is." She never missed a beat, and often you'd get a sassy quip when you least expected it!
