Ola Jean Farmer, 88, of West Columbia passed from this life at her home on Feb. 11, 2017 surrounded by her loving family. She was born in Tolar, Texas on August 9, 1928 to Maudi Ola and Ira Eugene McInroe.
Ola Jean attended Seldon Elementary School and graduated from Hamlin High School; received her Bachelor's degree in Elementary Education from North Texas State and her Master's degree in School Administration from Prairie View A & M. She was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma; was the Outstanding Citizen of the Year in West Columbia in 1981; served as a Cub Scout mother; organized the CEMS Auxiliary; worked the concession stand at Little League, Babe Ruth and High School baseball games. She also was a member of Columbia United Methodist Church and served in many positions there. Ola Jean taught 2nd, 4th, and 6th grade and was principal at Charlie Brown Intermediate School. She also served as director of Special Education for C B I S D. Ola Jean had a competitive spirit. In her early years she played fast pitch softball for the all female Black Cats softball team. She loved basketball, baseball, dancing, playing games and fishing; but her most cherished interest in life was her grandchildren. She loved playing hearts, 42 (dominos), spades, yahtzee and most of all Skip Bo with her special group of friends.
A celebration of life will be held on Wednesday, February 15, 2017 at 10:00 am at Columbia United Methodist Church in West Columbia with Dr Mike Deaton officiating. The family will receive friends on Tuesday, February 14, 2017 from 5:00 pm until 7:00 pm at Baker Funeral Home. Serving as pallbearers are Jim Sartwelle, Boogie Kapalski, Gary Sims, Mike French, Billy Jenn, Steve Willoughby and Carl Coffman. Honorary pallbearers are Roy Ledbetter, John Damon, Gene Pell, Jack Hays, Coleman Locke, Kim Kincannon and Men's Sunday School Class from Columbia United Methodist Church.
Left to cherish her memory are her husband of 69 years, James C. Farmer; sons, Jim Farmer & wife, Terri and Gary Farmer & wife, Susan; grandchildren, Lauren and Katherine Farmer; Caroline Reckling & husband, Mathew, Cade Farmer, and Jessica White & husband, Cole. She is preceded in death by her parents.
The family requests that in lieu of flowers donations be made in Ola Jean's name to C E M S or Columbia United Methodist Church . The family wishes to extend a special thanks to Helena Banks, Samantha Newman and Sarah Wheeler of Caring Senior Services for their loving care.
