Shirley M. Winstead

Shirley Winstead, age 90, of West Columbia passed away Thursday, October 3, in Houston, Texas. Shirley was born to Gordon and Rose Carl in Lima, Ohio, in 1934. She graduated from Milby High School in Houston and attended nursing school. She was married to Wallace Winstead and was the mother of six children, grandmother of four, and great-grandmother of four. After living in Illinois, North Texas, and Norway, she settled in West Columbia in 1978.

Shirley loved music. She attended St. John the Apostle Catholic Church in West Columbia where she played the piano for the choir for many years. She was also an enthusiastic member of the Sweet Adelines and sang in many shows and contests. Shirley also enjoyed travel and visited sites across the country and around the world. In her spare time, she relished word games and was surely fond of puns.

Shirley is survived by five children (Jean Register, Carl Winstead, Mara Saltsman, Alan Winstead, and Gale Froberg), four grandchildren (Evan Register, Samantha Burt, Grant Register and Camberon Kimball), four great-grandchildren, three sisters (Sharon McEntee, Lynn Lang, and Marie McCorkle), and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by husband Wallace, son Clay, and four brothers (James, Clifton, Frederick, and Michael Carl).

Shirley’s funeral will be held at St. John the Apostle Catholic Church, 807 Loggins Dr., West Columbia, Texas, at 10:00 AM on Saturday, October 12, 2024, with burial to follow at Cedar Lawn Haven of Rest Cemetery. Pastor Preston Quintela will preside. The cemetery service will be followed by a reception in the St. John church hall. Visitation will be at Baker & Sons Funeral Home, 634 S. Columbia Dr., West Columbia, from 5:00 to 7:00 PM Friday.
