Walter Mccarthy, Jr.

Walter Turpin McCarthy Jr. 88, of Sweeny passed from this life on March 17, 2016 in Angleton, Texas. He was born in Washington D C on December 6, 1927 to Walter T. McCarthy Sr and Ruth Clark McCarthy.

Walter joined the Navy 2 months before his 18th birthday and served from 1945 until 1948 on the USS Sicily CVE-118. He was assigned to H2-Catapult on the aircraft carrier escort where pilots were trained for take-off and landing. He attended Virginia Tech for 2 years, after which he hitchhiked from Virginia to Texas to work for Phillips Petroleum. He met and married Nancy Jones and has lived in Sweeny for 66 years. He worked & retired as a pipefitter for Local 211.
He loved people and no one was a stranger to Walter. He will be missed by family and many friends.

Left to cherish his memory are his children, Vicki McCarthy Mitchell and Stephen Wayne McCarthy & wife, Lisa; grandchildren, Barrett Mitchell, Christy McCarthy, Molly Wells & husband, Jared, Emilie Brule & husband, John, Dana Cox & husband, Chas, Donna Kelley & husband, Randy, Libby Mitchell & husband, Robert, Katie Hester & husband, Lance; great grandchildren, Gracie, Fletcher, and Decker Wells, Caleb Bellar, Jacob Mitchell, Lanie Hester, Brayden and Griffin Kelley, Kenna and Kenley Cox. He is preceded in death by his parents, wife, Nancy, brother, Edward Stephens McCarthy, son in law, Glenn A. Mitchell and good friend, Jimmie Marsh .

Graveside services will be held on Thursday, March 24, 2016 at 2:00 pm at Sweeny Cemetery with Robert Foster officiating.

In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made in Walter's name to the Sweeny Community Library.
