Wayne Hay

Wayne Melvin Hay (Coach Hay) died peacefully in Saint Joseph's Hospital on May 25, 2016 in Bryan, Texas at the age of 82.

Mr. Hay is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Anna Schmidt Hay of West Columbia, Texas; His children, Gary and Kathy Hay of Beaumont, Texas, Kelly and Susan Saniei-Hay of Irving, Texas; His Grandchildren, Carl and June Hay, Kurt Hay, and Jade and Deja Saniei-Hay; His siblings, Kenneth and Jeryl Lynn Hay, of West Columbia, Texas, Audentha Hay of Hearne, Texas, and Don and Sheran Hay of Hearne, Texas; His In-Laws, Sondra Stargel, of Amarillo, Texas, Dickie and Debra Schmidt, of Mason, Texas, and Janet Schmidt of Mason, Texas; And his many nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents, Hardy and Ozella Hay; His son, Steven Frederick Hay.

Mr. Hay was born on December 16, 1933 in Hearne, Texas to Hardy and Ozella Hay. He graduated from the University of Texas in 1960 with a Master's degree in Physical Education. He married Anna Kathryn Schmidt, his college sweetheart on April 25, 1959. After moving to West Columbia, Mr. Hay began working for CBISD as a teacher and coach. The couple welcomed 3 children into their home, Gary Wayne, Steven Frederick, and Kelly Kathryn. His children remember him as an active, loving, and generous father who encouraged and supported them in their endeavors.

Mr. Hay attended Graceland University in Lamoni, IA, for two years. At Graceland he played tennis and was a member of the cheerleading squad. After he completed 2 years at Graceland he served in the United States Army for 3 years and was discharged in 1956. It was in this same year that he began attending the University of Texas in Austin. He was a beloved teacher and coach for CBISD for 30 years and continued to be an active participant in the lives of his students and players over the years. Throughout his career he taught Biology and Health Education and he coached football, basketball, track, and tennis. He retired in 1990 and later worked as a hunting and fishing guide at Manor Lake. He was very active in his community as he continued to support CBISD athletics and served on the CEMS board. He was a compassionate, giving individual who loved God, his family, his many dear friends, life, people, music, fishing, photography, traveling, and his church. He was passionate about his church work, his prison ministry, nature and wildlife. He was an active and dedicated ordained elder in the Community of Christ. He served the Angleton Congregation as pastor and co-pastor for over 30 years.

Visitation is scheduled for Friday, May 27, 2016 at Baker's Funeral Home in West Columbia from 5:00pm until 7:00pm. A Celebration service is scheduled for Saturday, May 28, 2016 at 10:00am at the Columbia United Methodist Church in West Columbia, Texas, with a reception to follow in the Fellowship Hall. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Mr. Hay's life. Graveside services will be held at 4:00pm in Hearne, Texas at Suggs Cemetery.
