William Bender

William Alfred Bender, 93, of Sweeny passed peacefully from this life on July 1, 2015. Bill was born on Sept. 24, 1921 in Pittsburg, Kansas to John F. & Margarethe Bender. Bill attended Trinity University where he received his Masters Degree of Education. He also attended University of Oklahoma. He was also initiated into Pe-ET, an honor society at the University of Oklahoma, which means he was in the top 10 of his class. He was a lifetime member of the Texas Music Education Association and was dedicated to his students. Bill's teaching career spanned for over 55 years. He retired from Sweeny I S D in 1987 after many years of devoted teaching. He celebrated with many of his former students at events such as weddings, graduations and other momentus events. Bill was named 2010 Man of the year by the Sweeny Chamber of Commerce and was Ameritus lifetime member on the Board of Directors. He was very much a gentleman and a scholar. Memorial services will be held on Tuesday, July 7, 2015 at Baker Funeral Home in West Columbia at 11:00 am with John Price officiating. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made in Bill's name to the Bender Scholarship fund at Sweeny I S D 1310 Elm St Sweeny, Texas 77480. Bill was preceded in death his parents; the love of his life, Martha Jim, who he referred to as My Lady; and 2 brothers. The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to his caregivers, especially, Hattishia Johnson.
